Hello everyone! On Thursday this past week, I had the privilege of bringing my program, DreamUp New York, to the YWCA after school program at Emmet Belknap Middle School in Lockport, New York. Oh my, is this group of fifth and sixth graders beautiful, excited dreamers. Not only did we talk about what dreams are and our own personal dreams, but discussed the ways we already are or ways we can start working towards those dreams, NOW. Many of these dreamers are involved in clubs and sports outside of school to work on their individual talents that play a role in achieving their greatest dreams. What I loved about this group was how supportive and open they were with each other in sharing their dreams. Some in the group did not have a specific dream, and we talked about the fact that it is okay to be unsure, but that it is still important to be open to the desires in our hearts. Opening ourselves to the thought of dreaming and finding what is important to us is the start to DreamUp. When we find what we want, when we can state that dream with confidence and conviction, we then can move forward with discovering ways to get us there. One question I received at the end of the workshop was "what is the dream called once we reach it; is it still a dream?" Personally, I believe a dream, once you achieve it, is still a dream. Dreams require you to give more of yourself than ever imagined; you need to take risks in order to achieve something greater. Dreams are not easy to achieve-- they require hard work each day--persistence, and sometimes we are scared of what the future holds, unsure of our capabilities, BUT once we get there… we have achieved our dreams. I’m sure that dream will have also created a new one :) The process it takes to get to the dream is not a straight path, and may even require plan B or C. We may face obstacles that take us a few steps back, or discover springboards that move us miles ahead in the journey. Whatever that journey may hold, remember it all starts with a dream in our our heart, a plan in our head, and persistence to remain steadfast in achieving the dream. DreamUp! Have a blessed Sunday!
